Nick paints realistic landscapes, drawing on his local surroundings. Subject matter features road sides, houses, bridges and water. People and transportation serve as a “crutch” for the landscape which the impressionists were known to use. The atmosphere is quiet. The landscape and light matter most. He gravitates to the open air taking snapshots and developing paintings from them using card packaging from the recycle room and larger works on canvas. Upcycling packaging started as a way to sustian his prolific practice and also after a visit to a Frank Walter exhibition where he discovered matchbox sized works on card displaying views of jungles, cliffs and fishermen. This led to an investigation into art history’s roots and making art on paper, raising discussions around what constitutes a finished painting. Found material also relates to social and environmental issues, as well as the main subject of the work, the landscape.
